Bipolar Disorders feature extreme mood shifts between depressive and manic states that disrupt daily life and functioning. Bipolar disorders include:

Bipolar disorders are serious mental health conditions characterized by dramatic shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels. These shifts range from episodes of elevated, euphoric, or irritable moods known as mania or hypomania, to periods of deep depression that can make everyday tasks feel impossible.
Women with bipolar disorder often experience the condition differently than men. Depressive episodes tend to be more frequent and severe, and women are more likely to experience rapid cycling and mixed episodes. Hormonal changes related to menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause can also significantly influence the course of the disorder.
Without proper diagnosis and treatment, bipolar disorder can severely impact relationships, employment, physical health, and overall quality of life. With the right care and support, women with bipolar disorder can achieve stability and lead fulfilling lives.

A clinician will conduct an in-depth interview as the initial step in developing an individualized treatment plan. During this conversation, the clinician asks detailed questions about your presenting symptoms, chronic symptoms, cognitive functioning, and physical and mental health histories.
A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation ensures the treatment team receives an accurate picture of the underlying factors and any co-occurring mental health disorders such as anxiety, trauma, or substance use.
Diagnostic tools include the oral interview and any relevant psychological assessments. Based on the gathered information, a diagnosis and tailored treatment plan are created to guide the treatment process.
Bipolar disorder is a lifelong condition that requires ongoing professional management. Without proper treatment, mood episodes can become more frequent, more severe, and increasingly difficult to recover from.
Untreated bipolar disorder often leads to unstable relationships, job loss, and risky decision-making during manic or hypomanic episodes, followed by deep depressive lows that can bring their own dangers. Repeated untreated episodes can also cause lasting changes to mood stability over time, making each subsequent episode harder to manage than the last.
A psychiatric team can accurately distinguish bipolar disorder from other conditions it’s frequently mistaken for, such as depression alone, and build a medication and therapy plan suited to the specific type and pattern of mood episodes. Ongoing professional support also helps a woman recognize early warning signs before a full episode takes hold.
